For more than 15 years, Dr. Arthur Burnett traveled as a visitingprofessor to The University of the West Indies for the urology training programs in Trinidad and Jamaica. Gaining additional insight into certain unmet needs within the urologic training program in the Caribbean, Dr. Burnett began to increase thefrequency of his visits to the islands, volunteering his time toprovide cognitive and technical skill development, conduct grandrounds during which clinical cases of selected patients were reviewed in detail, perform highly specialized surgical proceduresthat expanded the level of care available on-island, assist withresearch protocol development, and mentor both the urologyresidents in training and practicing physicians. As a result ofthese interactions, Dr. Burnett founded UroMissionsWorks, Inc. (atax-exempt, not-for-profit, (501(c)(3) charitable organization) in 2017 as a means to continue and expand this work.
Traditionally, the focus and activity of healthcare in resource-poor locations has been primarily directed toward primary care and infectious diseases. However, it is becoming increasingly recognized that urological diseases represent an important spectrum of adverse health conditions that merit public healthcare efforts. Urological diseases encompass a wide range of illnesses and can affect anyone at any age. Examples of urological illnesses include urinary tract infections, urinary difficulties, urinary tract stones, reproductive and sexual dysfunctions and a variety of cancers, including those of the kidney, prostate, bladder and genital tract. These illnesses and their associated symptoms can range from not impacting the patient’s quality and length of life to being completely debilitating and life threatening and from occurring suddenly and severely to developing and worsening over a prolonged period of time.
Urological diseases have a wide-reaching affect, with individuals of lower socioeconomic status and ethnic minorities oftentimes unable to have access to or receive sufficient care. Their limited access to urological healthcare negatively impacts their overall health, quality of life and survival. It has been demonstrated that improving the training opportunities of urological healthcare providers within underserved communities results in improved urological knowledge and skills, that lead to improved access to quality care and ultimately,to improved urological health of the community.
